14. Repent: for the Kingdom of Heaven Is at Hand

Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, ‘The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.’

For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.

For John had said unto Herod, ‘It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.’

Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

And so after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

And from that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

15. Come Ye after Me, and I Will Make You to Become Fishers of Men

Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

And Jesus said unto them, “Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.”

And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

And they went into Capernaum.

And straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, “Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.”

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Hold thy peace, and come out of him.”

And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, and had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.” And they spake among themselves, saying, “What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.”

And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, “All men seek for thee.”

And he said unto them, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.”

And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

And he said unto them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.”

And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land.

And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.”

And Simon answering said unto him, “Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.”

And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon.

And Jesus said unto Simon, “Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.”

And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

16. All Things Whatsoever Ye Would That oi Anqrwpoi Should Do to You, Do Ye Even So to Them

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.”

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall oyontai God.”

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say any manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:’ But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.”

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, ‘‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour,’ and hate thine enemy.’ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for twn that persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

“Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”

“And when thou prayest, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”

“After this manner therefore pray ye: ‘Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And eisenegkhV us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.’”

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

“But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.”

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”

“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”

“And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

“Therefore take no thought, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or, ‘What shall we drink?’ or, ‘Wherewithal shall we be clothed?’ for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.”

“Ask, and doqhsetai you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and anoighsetai unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh anoighsetai.”

“Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that oi anqrwpoi should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this sums the law and the prophets.”

And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

17. I Will Have Mercy, and Not Sacrifice

When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city there came a leper to him, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus, and kneeling down to him, fell on his face, and besought him, saying, “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.”

And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, “I will; be thou clean.”

And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

And he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

And so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. (For they had built an house for him.)

And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

And it came to pass on this certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and he was borne of four: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

And Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Man, be of good cheer; Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.”

And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”

But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, “Whether is easier, to say, ‘Thy sins be forgiven thee;’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?’”

“But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins,” (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) “I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.”

And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And he went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, “We never saw it on this fashion.” And they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things to day.”

But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

And Jesus went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew (even Levi the son of Alphaeus, even Levi the publican), sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, “Follow me.”

And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

And Levi made Jesus a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house (even the house), many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, “Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?” And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, “Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?” And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, “How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?”

But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.”

“But go ye and learn what that meaneth, ‘I will have mercy, and not sacrifice:’”

While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, “My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.”

And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.

And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, ‘If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.’

But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, “Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.”

And the woman was made whole from that hour.

And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, He said unto them, “Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth.”

And they laughed him to scorn.

But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.

And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, “Thou son of David, have mercy on us.”

And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, “Believe ye that I am able to do this?”

They said unto him, “Yea, Lord.”

Then touched he their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it unto you.”

And their eyes were opened.

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

18. My Yoke Is Easy, and My Burden Is Light

And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, “As ye go, also preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”

“Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.”

“Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.”

“And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony autoiV and the Gentiles.”

“But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.”

“But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.”

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

“Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.”

And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, ‘Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?’

Jesus answered and said unto them, “Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.”

“And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.”

And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, “What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see?”

“A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger, which shall prepare thy way before thee.’”

At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.”

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
