41. Lazarus, Come Forth

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.”

When Jesus heard that, he said, “This sickness is not about death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.”

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

But when he had heard that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, “Let us go into Judaea again.”

His disciples say unto him, “Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?”

Jesus answered, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.”

Then said his disciples, “Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.”

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.”

“And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.”

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem, for Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem.

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?”

And they held their peace.

And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; And answered them, saying, “Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?”

And they could not answer him again to these things.

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, “Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.”

Then said he unto him, “A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, ‘Come; for all things are now ready.’”

“And they all with one consent began to make excuse.”

“The first said unto him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.’”

“And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.’”

“And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’”

“So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things.”

“Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.’”

“And the servant said, ‘Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.’”

“And the lord said unto the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.’”

Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, “This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.”

And he spake this parable unto them, saying, “A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me.’”

“And he divided unto them his living.”

“And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.”

“And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.”

“And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.”

“And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.”

“And when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.’’”

“And he arose, and came to his father.”

“But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”

“And the son said unto him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.’”

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’”

“And they began to be merry.”

“Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.”

“And he said unto him, ‘Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.’”

“And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.”

“And he answering said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.’”

“And he said unto him, ‘Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.’”

“‘It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.’”

And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.

And he said unto them, “There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate.”

“And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.”

“And he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’”

“But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.’”

“‘And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.’”

“Then he said, ‘I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’”

“Abraham saith unto him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’”

“And he said, ‘Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.’”

“And he said unto him, ‘If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.’”

Then when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus (the brother of Martha and Mary) had lain in the grave four days already.

Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Then said Martha unto Jesus, “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.”

Jesus saith unto her, “Thy brother shall rise again.”

Martha saith unto him, “I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Jesus said unto her, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though apoqanh, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never apoqanh unto the age. Believest thou this?”

She saith unto him, “Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.”

And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, “The Master is come, and calleth for thee.”

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, “She goeth unto the grave to weep there.”

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.”

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

And said, “Where have ye laid him?”

They said unto him, “Lord, come and see.”

Jesus wept.

Then said the Jews, “Behold how he loved him!”

And some of them said, “Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?”

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Jesus said, “Take ye away the stone.”

Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, “Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.”

Jesus saith unto her, “Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?”

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid.

And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.”

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin.

Jesus saith unto them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, “What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.”

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, “Ye know nothing at all, Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.”

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

42. What Therefore God Hath Joined Together, Let Not Man Put Asunder

The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for any cause?”

And he answered and said unto them, “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female? What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”

They say unto him, “Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?”

He saith unto them, “Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away taV gunaikaV umwn: but from the beginning it was not so.”

“And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away thn gunaika autou, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth apolelumenhn doth commit adultery.”

Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

But Jesus said, Afete ta little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

Then said he unto the disciples, “It is anendekton but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come! It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.”

And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, ‘What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?’

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

43. Were There Not Ten Cleansed? but Where Are the Nine?

And it had come to pass in his journey to Jerusalem (when he had departed Galilee), that he dihrceto through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

So as he now entered into a certain village (between Ephraim and Jericho), there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”

And when he saw them, he said unto them, “Go shew yourselves unto the priests.”

And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

And Jesus answering said, “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.”

And he said unto him, “Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”

44. The Kingdom of God Is within You

And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, ‘Lo here!’ or, ‘lo there!’ for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

And he said unto the disciples, “The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. And they shall say to you, ‘See here;’ or, ‘see there:’ go not after them, nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.”

“And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.”

“Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.”

“Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.”

And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: “Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.”

“The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.’”

“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, ‘God be merciful to me a sinner.’”

“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

45. Whosoever Shall Not Receive the Kingdom of God As a Little Child Shall in No Wise Enter Therein

And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Afete little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

“Verily I say unto you, ‘Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.’”

And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

46. With God All Things Are Possible

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, a certain ruler, and kneeled to him, and asked him, “Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?”

And he said unto him, “Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.”

He saith unto him, “Which?”

Jesus said, The commandments thou knowest, ‘Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,’ ‘Defraud not,’ ‘Honour thy father and thy mother:’ and, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’”

The young man saith unto him, “Master, all these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?”

Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, “One thing thou lackest, yet fails thou one thing: If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell thy ta uparconta, sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.”

And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, “How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

And they that heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”

And he said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

And the young man went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, “How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!”

And the disciples were astonished at his words.

But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, “Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle dielqein, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?”

And Jesus looking upon them saith, “With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, “Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

“And again I say unto you, ‘It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.’”

When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

Then answered Peter and said unto him, “Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?”

And Jesus said unto them, “Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

"And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive pollaplasiona, and shall inherit everlasting life."

"Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life."

“But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.”

“For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.”

“And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.”

“And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, And said unto them; ‘Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you.’ And they went their way.”

“Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.”

“And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, ‘Why stand ye here all the day idle?’”

“They say unto him, ‘Because no man hath hired us.’”

“He saith unto them, ‘Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.’”

“So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, ‘Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.’”

“And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.”

“But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, Saying, ‘These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.’”

“But he answered one of them, and said, ‘Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?’”

“‘Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.’”

“‘Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?’”

“So the last shall be first, and the first last.”

And he said unto them, “Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.”

Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.”

And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

47. To Sit on My Right Hand, and on My Left, Is Not Mine To Give

And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.”

And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and hrzato to tell them what things should happen unto him, Saying, “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.”

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, “Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.”

And he said unto them, “What would ye that I should do for you?”

They said unto him, “Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.”

Then came to him the mother of Zebedees children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.

And he said unto her, “What wilt thou?”

She saith unto him, “Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.”

And he saith unto them, “Ye shall drink indeed of my cup: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.”

And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren and they began to be much displeased with James and John.

But Jesus called them unto him, and said, “Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to make his life a ransom for many.”

48. To Day I Must Abide at Thy House

And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging: And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant.

And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.

And he cried, saying, “Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.”

And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, “Thou son of David, have mercy on me.”

And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him, Saying, “What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee?”

And he said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”

And Jesus said unto him, “Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.”

And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.

And they came to Jericho: And Jesus entered and dihrceto Jericho.

And as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, “Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.”

And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, “Thou son of David, have mercy on me.”

And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called.

And they call the blind man, saying unto him, “Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.”

And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

And Jesus answered and said unto him, “What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?”

The blind man said unto him, “Lord, that I might receive my sight.”

And Jesus said unto him, “Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.”

And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.”

And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.”

And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, “What will ye that I shall do unto you?”

They say unto him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.”

So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, “Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.”

And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

49. The Son of Man Is Come to Seek and to Save That Which Was Lost

And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.”

And Jesus said unto him, “This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.

50. My House Shall Be Called the House of Prayer

Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, eiV Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, Saying unto them, “Go into the village over against you, and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her, whereon yet never man sat: loose them, and bring them unto me.”

“And if any man say unto you, ‘Why do ye this?’ And if any man ask you, ‘Why do ye loose him?’ And if any man say ought unto you, thus shall ye say unto him, ‘Because the Lord hath need of them;’ and straightway he will send them hither.”

All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Tell ye the daughter of Sion, ‘Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.’”

And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him.

And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, “Why loose ye the colt?”

And certain of them that stood there said unto them, “What do ye, loosing the colt?”

And they said, “The Lord hath need of him,” and they let them go.

And the disciples brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set Jesus thereon.

And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, “Hosanna to the son of David: ‘Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord;’ Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.”

And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; Saying, “Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.”

And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?”

And the multitude said, “This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.”

And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called the house of prayer;’ but ye have made it ‘a den of thieves.’”

And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

And when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve; and he lodged there.

There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, “Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Then said Jesus, “Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.”

“For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.”

Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

51. My House Shall Be Called of All Nations the House of Prayer

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, “Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.”

And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.”

These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.”

And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, And he taught, saying unto them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called the house of prayer of all nations?’ but ye have made it ‘a den of thieves.’”

And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

And when even was come, he went out of the city.

And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

52. The Stone Which the Builders Rejected, the Same Is Become the Head of the Corner

And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, And spake unto him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?”

And Jesus answered and said unto them, “I will also ask of you one question, which if ye tell me, and answer me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.”

“The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? answer me.”

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we shall say, ‘From heaven;’ he will say unto us, ‘Why did ye not then believe him?’ But if we shall say, ‘Of men;’ all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet;” for they feared the people.

And they answered Jesus, and said, “We cannot tell.”

And Jesus answering saith unto them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

And he began to speak unto them by parables. “But what think ye?”

“A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, ‘Son, go work to day in my vineyard.’”

“He answered and said, ‘I will not:’ but afterward he repented, and went.”

“And he came to the second, and said likewise.”

“And he answered and said, ‘I go, sir:’ and went not.”

“Whether of them twain did the will of his father?”

They say unto him, “The first.”

Jesus saith unto them, “Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.”

“For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.”

“Hear another parable:” Jesus saith unto them, “Did ye never read in the scriptures, And have ye not read this scripture; ‘The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?’”

And when they heard it, they said, “God forbid.”

And he beheld them, and said, “What is this then that is written, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?’”

And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.

But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet. Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them; and they left him, and went their way.
